*…as Unilorin Marks 50th Anniversary, Commissions Space Research Centre
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, SAN, has called for a united national front against insecurity, warning that Nigeria stands at a critical crossroads amid rising violence and escalating international attention.
Speaking during a press briefing at the University Auditorium on Tuesday, as part of activities marking the University’s 50th anniversary, the VC said the celebration was taking place “at a defining moment in Nigeria’s history,” with renewed threats from terrorists and kidnappers across the country, including Kwara State.
He cited recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to visit Nigeria “guns-a-blazing”, noting that Nigeria must welcome international support but reject actions that undermine the nation’s sovereignty.
Prof. Egbewole emphasized that unity across ethnic, religious, and political divides is crucial to tackling insecurity, urging Nigerians to rally together to protect the country.
The week-long golden jubilee celebration began on Monday with a colourful “Unilorin at 50 Walk” to the Emir of Ilorin’s Palace, where the Emir, Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, received the University community and offered royal blessings.
That same day included an interactive session between the Vice-Chancellor and former principal officers of the University, allowing past leadership to share insights and inspire the present generation.
The premiere of the alumni-produced movie “The Son of Iron” also took place, showcasing the talent and creativity of graduates while celebrating the University’s contribution to arts and culture.
Other activities planned for the week include health screenings by the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, student leadership engagements, and outreach programmes as part of the University’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Wednesday has been designated Alumni Day, featuring a colloquium, fundraising for the Innovation and Transcript Hub, commissioning of the Alumni Secretariat, and presentation of the 3D model of the anniversary project.
A highlight of the week was the commissioning of the NASRDA/Defence Space Administration Space Research Centre, described by the Vice Chancellor as “bold, courageous, and innovative.”
The facility, developed in partnership with National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) and the Defence Space Administration (DSA), is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s space research capabilities and complements the developmental efforts of Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
Speaking at the commissioning, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Oluyede (represented), said the centre will provide researchers and students with direct access to advanced tools and knowledge, enabling the University to compete on a global scale.
The celebrations will culminate on Thursday, November 27, with an anniversary lecture by renowned Kenyan scholar Prof. P.L.O. Lumumba, followed by the launch of a N50 billion endowment fund to support future projects.
Special recognitions will also be awarded to distinguished Nigerians, including the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in acknowledgment of her contributions to national development.
