World-renowned boxer Anthony Joshua was on Monday involved in a road traffic accident along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Makun area of Ogun State, leaving two persons dead and others injured.
The accident occurred shortly after 11am near Danco Filling Station, before the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound lane of the expressway, according to eyewitnesses.
Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are still being investigated by authorities.
An eyewitness, who spoke to PUNCH Online, said the convoy consisted of two vehicles, a Lexus SUV and a Pajero SUV, with Joshua seated at the rear of the Lexus at the time of the crash.
“It was a two-vehicle convoy. Joshua was seated behind the driver, with another person beside him. There was also a passenger beside the driver, making four occupants in the Lexus that crashed. His security detail was in the vehicle behind them,” the eyewitness said.
He added that immediately after the crash, bystanders and other road users rushed to the scene to assist the victims before emergency responders arrived.
“Other eyewitnesses and I began the rescue and flagged down oncoming vehicles to assist. A few minutes later, officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived,” he said.
According to the eyewitness account, two occupants of the Lexus, the passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua, died instantly at the scene of the accident.
Another witness, Adeniyi Orojo, confirmed that the incident occurred just before Danco Filling Station in Makun and resulted in the loss of two lives.
The Ogun State Police Command also confirmed the accident. The command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said Joshua and one other survivor were taken to hospital for treatment.
“Yes, the crash occurred. Two persons died, while Joshua and one other have been hospitalised and are receiving treatment at a hospital that would not be disclosed,” Babaseyi stated.
