The Chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security, Hon. Garba Muhammad, has raised alarm over alleged threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly complex in Abuja.
Speaking on Tuesday during a public hearing on a bill to establish a Legislative Security Directorate, Muhammad said the parliament has been facing serious security breaches, including car thefts, fake identity entries, and infiltration by unauthorized persons.
“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” Muhammad revealed.
“Legislators are exposed to threats from constituents and others who gain easy access into their offices without any formal appointment.”
He warned that such threats could cripple parliamentary operations if not urgently addressed.
“If proper measures are not taken, it will truncate legislative activities; no representation, no oversight, no budget, no plenary,” he cautioned.
Muhammad said the proposed bill would help strengthen internal security and adopt global best practices in parliamentary protection.
“This bill seeks to ensure the best security architecture in the National Assembly to protect legislators, staff, visitors, and property,” he added.
