To ensure the credibility of Nigeria’s education sector, the Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to identifying and eliminating individuals with counterfeit certificates in both public and private educational institutions.
During a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, May 3, the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, restated this commitment while receiving the findings of an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee tasked with addressing the issue of degree certificate fraud.
Established on January 9, the committee’s primary objective was to investigate the prevalence of degree forgery in domestic and foreign private universities, as well as examine the potential involvement of government entities or personnel in facilitating the issuance or validation of fake credentials.
Expressing concern over the investigation’s results, Mamman stressed the ministry’s determination to collaborate with relevant bodies to purge the education sector of fraudulent activities. “The credibility of our education system must remain intact. It’s troubling to discover individuals holding counterfeit certificates in both public and private sectors.
This report underscores the urgent need for action,” Mamman emphasized. He cautioned that any government official implicated in such malpractices would face legal consequences. Mamman cited instances where individuals were found with falsified international certificates, falsely claiming academic qualifications they had not legitimately obtained.
